​Animal Welfare Association of Iceland (DÍS) was founded on the 13th July 1914 and is a non- governmental organization (NGO). ​It is our strong opinion that animal welfare is a public issue and that welfare of animals is one of the basic cornerstones of a healthy society.

The main role of the organization is:

​To work for the improvement of animal welfare, to actively participate in discussions about their issues in the public arena and to contribute to an objective debate on animal welfare.

To stay on watch  how the legal protection of animals is executed and to promote good legislation and regular public supervision for the protection of animals.  

To advocate  education and information about good treatment of animals and encourage schools, non-profit organizations and individuals to promote their welfare.

The activities of the Animal Welfare Association are based on voluntary work and self-generated funds.
